New Edenton Boat Builder Opens: What It Means for Buyers

Edenton's marine trades sit on the Chowan River, and the boats built here are sold across the country.

A boat factory opened in Edenton on October 20, and it says 200 jobs

The Whiskey Project Group opened a 60,000 square foot boat plant in Chowan County on October 20, 2026. The company builds tactical watercraft for defense and government customers.

The job numbers do not match yet, and this post says so plainly. The state’s announcement commits to 30 jobs to start. Edenton’s mayor told The Daily Advance the company expects about 200.

For a buyer, the direction is what matters. Chowan County is adding manufacturing payroll that does not depend on retirees or second homes.

The company is Australian. It designs and builds advanced watercraft for defense, government, commercial, and recreational customers. Its founder, Darren Schuback, started it in 2019 after leaving the military.

The Edenton site covers 50 waterfront acres and will serve as the company’s primary North American production and sustainment hub. It builds the Whiskey, NAiAD, and VYCOR brands, including boats up to 40 feet.

The NC Department of Commerce lists the roles as advanced manufacturing, engineering, technical services, vessel repair, and maintenance. That skill mix reaches past the assembly line, and it is the kind of work that holds up when consumer spending softens.

The Daily Advance covered the opening, including the mayor’s figure of roughly 200 jobs and the 40 foot Whiskey Bravo on display. Governor Josh Stein and Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley attended.

Regulator employs about 300 people and is hiring now

Regulator Marine has built offshore center consoles in Edenton since 1988, when Joan and Owen Maxwell founded it.

Its careers page, checked October 22, 2026, lists openings in Assembly, Lamination, Patch and Detail, and Stockroom and Facilities. It states that on the job training is provided for people with no boat building experience.

Dana Dale, a Patch and Detail supervisor, describes a long career in one place: “I’ve been working in boats since 1985. Regulator is just different. There is a real sense of family here.”

Albemarle sold in 2024 and kept every employee

Albemarle Boats and Carolina Classic Boats were sold to Edenton Boatworks LLC, a Murphy Alternative Investments company, The Daily Advance reported.

All employees stayed, according to the company. Burch Perry, grandson of Albemarle’s founder, remained general manager over both brands. The boats run 24 to 41 feet.

The brands trace to 1978. That continuity is worth more to a local economy than a new name on the building, because the workforce and the suppliers stay put.

Chowan unemployment was 3.4 percent in August

Chowan County’s unemployment rate was 3.4 percent in August 2026, down from 3.6 percent in July, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

A rate that low tells you two things. The county is working. An employer here also has a thin pool to hire from, which is why Regulator advertises training rather than experience.

A payroll is one buyer pool that does not leave in winter

Demand that does not depend on a stock market. A boat builder’s paycheck pays rent and a mortgage in every month of the year. Retirees and second home owners do not behave that way.

A resale pool that stays. When you sell, you are not only selling to someone moving down from Virginia. You are selling to people who already work here.

A trades base you can hire. Lamination, upholstery, canvas, rigging, and marine electrical shops cluster around builders. Those same shops do finish and repair work on houses.

One customer base that is not purely discretionary. Defense and government contracts behave differently from a 40 foot center console bought with disposable income. That mix is new here.

What this post cannot tell you

This post does not state wages. None of the three builders publishes them, and a county average would mislead you about a specific job.

The job totals are plans, not delivered headcount. Thirty and 200 are both forward looking statements made by people with an interest in the number. Treat the low figure as committed and the high figure as hoped for.

Nothing here tells you hiring pace, shift schedules, or whether any of it changes the block you are looking at.

Boat building is cyclical. Regulator, Albemarle, and Carolina Classic have all been through downturns. Treat this as a base of demand, not a guarantee.

Edenton’s payroll is a base of demand, not a guarantee

The listing pages and county briefs on this site already show you what is for sale. What they cannot show you is what a new boat plant means for the street you are considering.

That answer changes block by block. A house a few minutes from the Rocky Hock site sells to a different buyer than a waterfront lot priced for retirement.

Start with the brief that matches your situation: entry-level, historic, or waterfront. Read the trade-off chapter before you tour. If a specific Chowan listing has you unsure which brief it belongs in, send the address through the contact form and I will point you to the chapter that covers it.
